The development political voluteer service weltwärts - towards the world - allows young people between the age of 18 and 28 years, to voluntary engage themselves abroad, while collecting international experiences, as much as intercultural competencies and qualifications for their professional orientation.

weltwärts was founded in 2008 by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). Since then, more than 25,000 volunteers have been sent from Germany and dedicated themselves to development projects. Since 2013 young people from partner countries have also been able to do development volunteer service in Germany. In the first two years, 400 people took this opportunity and helped in charity organisations in Germany.

The weltwärts programme get administered by the Engagement Global gGmbH and the coordination department weltwärts. The final application of the programme is done by the individual carrier like weltwärts-Bremen.

weltwärts-Bremen is one sending organisation, who run their programmes autonomously, but under the guidelines and the support of the federal programme.
